The Simpsons & Stuff - Better Than BiMonSciFiCon

My Fourth of July Text Message

So i sent out one of those mass text messages that we all love and hate at the same time. I tend to rely on the "mass text" for holidays to cursorily connect with my many friends that I never call. It is also a great way to evaluate your own friends by seeing who responds, and how quickly.

Anyhoo, this is what I sent

Venezuelans Don't Like Their Simpsons in the Morning

Ran across this little story on Yahoo yesterday.

It seems that a Venezuelan television station has been punished for showing Simpsons reruns at 11am. Seems that the Venezuelan tv regulators have deemed that morning hours should be "kid-friendly" shows only. Now the station has to air two public service ads a day for thirty days as part of it's reprimand

Chess, Simpsons-Style

Okay, so this particular post is more of an aside than a true post, but bear with me here...

There was a time in my life that it seemed that every present or gift I received from family and friends had a theme, a Simpsons theme. I knew it was getting bad when one Christmas I got two Simpson's Clue sets, and wouldn't you know it, I had already received that game the previous birthday

JacK Black Wasted in "Husbands and Knives"

So, waiting for tonight's new episode, "Apocalypse Cow," I am forced to re-watch the mediocre "Husbands and Knives." This episode featured the guest voice of Jack Black as the owner of the new comic book store in town, right across the street from the Android's Dungeon. The episode totally wasted not only a good guest voice, but a great potential plot.

"That 90's Show"

FOX re-aired an episode from January last night, "That 90's Show", and as I didn't see it when it originally aired, it was new to me, and all I can say is, why must The Simpsons anger me so when they go back and try to re-write history?

Ok, I know the series has been on for forever, and that as story lines dry up(?), the writers struggle to keep the show relevant and contemporary, but "That 90's Show" was just weak. True, the Simpsons are at their best when making fun of our "pop" culture, but there is a very subtle difference between parody and simply relying on pop culture references to get laughs. "That 90's Show" just seemed derivative to so much of an extent, that I dare say I did not like the episode

Smoke on the Daughter

Wow, tonight's new episode was pretty funny, a nice return to form if you ask me.

Favorite Moment: Bart in full camoflage, rising from the dumpster full of used lag warmers all Martin Sheen-Apocalypse Now style. Always good to see "good" film references, although that is depending on your definition of good cinema and whether or not you have seen Apocalypse Now: Redux or not

Lil' Bush Returns with New Episodes

Anyone happy to see new episodes coming out? I am. But then again, I spend a good majority of my time watching cartoons.

Nancy Cartwright Honored by Church of Scientology (LINK)

So there I am sitting on the bus, reading the latest issue of Time Magazine, and on page 14, in the People Section, under Briefing, is a picture of Bart Simpson, with his ubiquitous skateboard and a cocky expression. It seems that Nancy Cartwright, once counted among my personal heroes, has been honored by the Church of Scientology, and that honor came after Ms. Cartwright donated $10 million to the Church last year.

And the "brief" makes mention that the $10 million is twice Cartwright's annual salary.

The Simpsons are Going to the Oscars!

Who would have believed it those many, many years ago, when a little cartoon short appeared on The Tracy Ullman Show, that the Simpsons would be nominated for an Oscar, or more officially an Academy Award?

I did
