"That 90's Show"
FOX re-aired an episode from January last night, "That 90's Show", and as I didn't see it when it originally aired, it was new to me, and all I can say is, why must The Simpsons anger me so when they go back and try to re-write history?
Ok, I know the series has been on for forever, and that as story lines dry up(?), the writers struggle to keep the show relevant and contemporary, but "That 90's Show" was just weak. True, the Simpsons are at their best when making fun of our "pop" culture, but there is a very subtle difference between parody and simply relying on pop culture references to get laughs. "That 90's Show" just seemed derivative to so much of an extent, that I dare say I did not like the episode.
Maybe it is just hard for me to swallow the idea of suddenly having Bart born in the 90's. If the Simpsons are going to continually reinvent the family history, without being absolutely cheeky about it (a great example of that being the "B-Sharps" episode), then all I ask is that the writers keep in mind that the core and loyal audience does not like to have their intelligence questioned.
Although, I can argue that I am taking it all too seriously. It is a cartoon, and The Simpsons saw a ripe opportunity to make fun of the early 1990's, a very funny period in American cultural history, and they took it. I just think that by suddenly having Marge go to college and Homer start the grunge movement was not only going too far, but just dumb. I just think that someone along the production line would have said so.
And just as I finish writing this, I find that someone else out there in BlogLand seems to have felt the same way -- or at least half of him did.
