Conan O'Brien to Return to the Simpsons?
So, I am wondering...now that Conan O'Brien is looking for work, could he go back to writing for The Simpsons? Those were the glory days after all.
Let's look at the episodes that Conie wrote.
"Marge Vs. the Monorail" -- brilliant! The song, Phil Hartman as Lyle Lanely (damn Phil's wife, btw, damn her right to heck), "I call the big one Bitey," and "Doughnuts...is there anything they can't do?"
"New Kid on the Block" -- another brilliant episode! The chick from Roseanne as the new neighbor and Bart's first older woman crush, the swimming pool joke, the heart drop kicked against the wall and then slides down into a trash can, Jimbo's pants chaffing him.
Notice how Bart gives the wrong address?
"Treehouse of Horror IV" -- you know this one...it has Ned Flanders as the Devil while Homer sings, "I'm smarter than the devil, I'm smarter than the devil" because he got out of giving the Devil his soul for a doughnut. It also has the spoof of the Twilight Zone Movie's gremlin-y thing on a plane with a crazed John Lithgow trying to warn the crew, but in the Simpson's universe, it's a gremlin on the school bus with Bart trying to warn Otto and Principal Skinner, only to wind up in a straight jacket. And finally, the send-up of the Coppola disaster, Bram Stoker's Dracula, with Burns as Dracula inviting the Simpson family over for dinner in hopes of feasting on their blood. Yes, one of the better Treehouses, although I am not sure which segment Conan wrote. Any one of them is a contender for best in show for that episode.
And that brings me to my favorite Conan O'Brien penned-episode, "Homer Goes to College." This episode makes my top ten list. When the kids are watching Itchy and Scratchy, and the nerds pull out the cord for their rock tumbler just as Scratchy is finally going to get Itchy, and the kids scream, "plug it in, plug it in!" The skinny nerd asks, "The tv or the rock tumbler?" Kids: The TV, the TV!" Or the prank of the crusty ol' Dean which included hitting him with a car.
Like I said, if Conan needs work, I would love to see him back at the Simpsons. I want to say they need new blood, but in the case of Conan O'Brien, that would be like saying they need old blood.
And just for the record, I am not really b*tching about the Simpsons or hoping on the let's dog the Simpsons bandwagon, but who can deny that the writing quality has suffered in these last, what like seven seasons. It is still better than 90% of the crap on TV, and after twenty years, what do we expect?
